Dog Agility Equipment

Dog agility equipment doesn’t have to be pricy and perfect.  If you want to start dog agility training at home, you can afford your own dog agility equipment.

Before you buy dog agility equipment, think about what your goals are with dog agility.  There are a lot of reasons to participate in dog agility.  Some dog parents want to compete just for fun.  Some are serious about dog agility competition.  Keep your goals in mind when you look for dog agility equipment.

A full dog agility course has the following:

Contact Equipment.  This includes dog-walks, A-frames, and teeters.

Jumps  These include single, double, and triple jumps.

        Weaves

        Tunnels

        Closed Tunnels

A Pause Table (possibly-it depends on where you’re participating in agility)

Although of course you’d love to have a full course of agility equipment in your backyard, you don’t need to spend all the money to have all that equipment to train your dog in agility.  All you really need is at least one contact obstacle (a teeter is usually a good choice because if your dog can deal with the motion of the teeter, which often causes problems for beginning dogs, your dog can probably handle the other contact obstacles too.

Of course, you can never have enough single jumps, but you also might think about a double jump or triple jump. If you can’t afford a double or triple jump or you don’t have room for one, you can put two or three single jumps together for practice.   Getting eight single jumps will give you everything you need to practice lots of agility drills and exercises.

An inexpensive way to add a jump to your back yard that will help with tunnels and chutes too is to hang an old tire for your dog to jump through.  You can also make a long closed shoot by sewing a sheet into a tube and attaching one end to something like a hula hoop.  Of course, agility competition approved chutes are preferable, but use what you can to get your dog familiar with the obstacle idea.

Any sturdy table can serve as a pause tables.  You must have a pause table in your agility training program. If your dog cannot pause, you’ll have trouble with other commands too.

Weaves are an important addition to your home dog agility equipment.  Try and match what your dog agility training class is using-many types of weaves are available:  weave chutes, angled weaves, or straight lined weaves.
