ABOUT ANDE AND MUGGINS
Andrea Rains Waggener
Andrea Rains Waggener is an enthusiastic Dog Mom and an author who has a talent for making dogs happy and the ability to inspire people to improve their lives. Her work encourages people to look within and implement change to create an upbeat, happy life for both themselves AND their dogs.
Dog Parenting—How to Have an Outrageously Happy, Well-adjusted Canine (Adams Media Corp. 2006) is Andrea’s latest book. She is also the author of Healthy, Wealthy and Wise—Fifty-two Life-changing Lessons for the Twenty-first Century (Hazelden, 2005), a self help book that describes and explains how to have 52 inner qualities that will help readers live their best lives, and Alternate Beauty (Bantam 2005), a novel about an obese woman who finds herself in an alternate universe where fat is considered beautiful.
Andrea, who has a B. A. in Psychology and a J.D. from The College of William and Mary, has been a Dog Mom most of her adult life. Wanting to encourage other dog lovers to become the best parents possible to their canine kids, Andrea wrote Dog Parenting and created an online community for dog parents and their canine kids at www.dogparenting.com where dog parents can post pictures and stories about their dogs and get and give advice to other dog parents.
Feature articles and book reviews of Andrea’s books have appeared in Fitness, Shape, and Diane magazines, as well as in various newspapers. She’s been a warm and engaging guest on FOX News Networks, Fox and Friends, Pacific Northwest TV’s Northwest Afternoon and Being In Seattle, as well as on several radio talk shows.
Andrea live on the coast of Washington State with her husband, Tim, and her beloved Springer spaniel, Muggins. Muggins, who is featured prominently in Dog Parenting, is only one of the dogs who can bark Andrea's praises. Andrea frequently dog-sits for friends and family. In spite of a busy writing career, she makes her dog parenting duties a priority. She and Muggins walk on the beach daily.
Muggins
Muggins is a black and white Springer Spaniel with an impressive lineage. Her parents were both Grand Champions. She was born on October 2, 1992, and she has 7 brothers and sisters—although she hasn’t had contact with them since she was 8-weeks-old.
Muggins was adopted by Andrea Rains Waggener and her then husband, Brad, two days after Thanksgiving in 1992. For Muggins and Andrea, it was love at first lick. Though Muggins loved her first dad, she’s even crazier about the one she has now—Andrea’s new husband, Tim.
Although Muggins has no writing credits of her own, she claims to be Andrea’s best muse. Certainly, Dog Parenting—How to Have an Outrageously Happy, Well-adjusted Canine (Adams Media Corp. 2006) wouldn’t have been written if Muggins hadn’t been around to inspire it. Muggins also inspired the website, www.dogparenting.com. Muggins believes that the best parts of both the book and the website are the ones that feature her.
As Andrea’s nearly constant companion, Muggins has rightfully earned the moniker, “Velcro Dog,” which her breeder says applies to dogs who love to stick near their people. Muggins loves long beach walks; exploring the woods in her back yard; barking at deer, dogs, horses, and kitty cats; playing with any of her 50-plus toys; and practicing her cute poses to cajole her dog parents into giving her treats.
Muggins is still a little miffed that her picture isn’t on the cover of Dog Parenting. Although, she certainly wouldn’t have agreed to wear a silly bonnet even if they’d asked her to. At least she’s on the home page of www.dogparenting.com.
Muggins says that her dog mom, Andrea, is the best dog mom in the world. Muggins takes great offense at suggestions that she is “spoiled.” Cheeses can be spoiled, she says. Dogs can only be well-loved. As is their due.
